Bachelor of science from U.S. Naval Academy, 1951; master of science in aeronautical engineering and instrumentation engineering from the University of Michigan, 1957; three honorary doctorates; Colonel, USAF, Ret.; test pilot; unsucessful application for NASA astronaut group 3; chosen 1963 as Military Astronaut - Class 4; he was the eighth man to walk on the moon; since 1973 formed the Christian Organisation "High Flight Foundation" and became Chairman of the Board; trips to Turkey in search for Noah's Ark; he died of a heart attack.
