Jackson received his bachelor of science degree (with honors) in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Illinois. he entered NASA's Flight Research Center (now the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center) as a research pilot in the center's flight operations department. Upon leaving NASA in 1971, Jackson returned to the teaching profession and the military reserve.
