The EVA was needed to replace a faulty battery charge/discharge unit (BCDU). The BCDU failed to activate following the October 11, 2019 installation of new lithium-ion batteries on the space station's truss.

The astronauts continued to replace nickel-hydrogen batteries with more powerful lithium-ion batteries (working site: P6 Channel 4B battery R&R A-F).

Their task was again to replace nickel-hydrogen batteries with more powerful lithium-ion batteries on the far end of the station's port truss (working site: P6 Channel 4B battery R&R A-F).
