Was planned as the first manned flight of an Apollo spacecraft (Block I, earth orbit version). On December 22 was announced that the crewmembers (Schirra, Eisele and Cunningham) of the then cancelled second Block I mission (Apollo 2 (AS-205)) would become the backup crew of Apollo 1. Grissom (Commander), White (Senior Pilot) and Chaffee (Pilot) were killed in a fire while testing their capsule on the pad on 27 January 1967.
