On December 22, 1966 was announced that the crewmembers (Walter Schirra, Donn Eisele and Walter Cunningham) of the then cancelled second Block I mission (Apollo 2 (AS-205)) would become the backup crew of Apollo 1. Gus Grissom (Commander), Edward White (Senior Pilot) and Roger Chaffee (Pilot) were killed in a fire while testing their capsule on the pad on January 27, 1967.
